Áras Attracta - an Irish "Winterbourne" RTE 9 December 2014

Áras Attracta, a residential respite and day care facility for adults with intellectual disabilities in Swinford, County Mayo has suspended nine care workers for abuse, some of which is alleged to be tantamount to torture.

The facility has been on the radar for at least four years following the suspicious death of a resident in 2010.

Undercover journalists from RTE's investigative unit have been surveiling the home for some time. RTE will broadcast an in depth look at the facility on  Tuesday 9 December on "Prime Time" which can be viewed online here: PrimeTime

A new policy has been put in place by the HSE to help protect vulnerable people from abuse. The policy accompanied by €1.2 Million will apply to older people and people with disabilities who, as a result of physical or intellectual impairment, may be at risk of abuse.

Too little too late.

We need to look intellectual disability in the eye.
